Trip Overview

The Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek in Nepal, part of the Great Himalayan Trail (GHT), is a challenging camping trek that leads to the base of Dhaulagiri, the world’s seventh-highest mountain at 8,167 meters (26,246 ft). This trek offers an exceptional chance to explore a remote region of the Himalayas, known for its dramatic terrain, with Dhaulagiri rising sharply above the Kali Gandaki Gorge. The peak was first successfully climbed in 1960 by a Swiss and Austrian team via the northeast ridge.

This less-trodden route on the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek in Nepal provides incredible adventure and a deeply immersive remote experience, making it perfect for camping enthusiasts. Along the way, you cross Nepal’s largest conservation area—the Annapurna Conservation Area—which hosts diverse and exotic flora and fauna. Throughout the trek, you will witness pristine natural beauty, ranging from lush alpine vegetation at lower elevations to rugged rock outcrops and pristine ice slopes higher up. The trail traverses rugged terrain featuring stunning landscapes rarely seen by visitors.

The trek circuits around the impressive Dhaulagiri massif via the demanding French Pass. On your journey, you will pass through the “hidden valley,” a remote, cold area known for its harsh winds and challenging trails. While the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek in Nepal is more demanding than many other treks in the region, the rewards are extraordinary.

Dramatic views of glaciers, moraines, and towering mountain peaks will accompany you throughout. Evenings and nights are spent camping in the wilderness beneath the star-studded Himalayan sky, creating a truly immersive camping trek experience.

Along with the remote wilderness experience, the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek in Nepal also offers cultural encounters with the Magar and Thakali communities as you pass through traditional villages. For trekkers with extra time, off-the-beaten-path treks such as the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek, Makalu Base Camp and Limi Valley Trek. can also be explored.

Best Time to Do the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek in Nepal

The ideal time to trek the Dhaulagiri Circuit in Nepal is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (Mid-September to November) seasons. These months offer the most stable weather, clear skies, and breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks, making your high-altitude camping trek  more enjoyable.

During spring, daytime temperatures range from 12°C to 20°C (54°F to 68°F) at lower altitudes, while higher elevations can drop to around -10°C (14°F) at night. This season also brings vibrant rhododendron blooms and lush landscapes, making it a popular time for nature lovers and photographers.

In autumn, post-monsoon skies are crystal clear, and the weather is dry and cool. So it is perfect for trekking the challenging passes of the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek in Nepal.. Temperatures typically range from 10°C to 18°C (50°F to 64°F) during the day and can fall to -15°C (5°F) or lower at high camps. This is the most popular trekking season in Nepal due to excellent visibility and reliable trail conditions.

During the winter months (December to February), the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek becomes extremely challenging due to freezing temperatures, heavy snowfall, and the closure of high-altitude passes such as French Pass and Dhampus Pass. Likewise, the monsoon season (June to August) brings intense rainfall, increased risk of landslides, slippery trails, and generally poor trekking conditions, making this period unsuitable for high-altitude treks in Nepal.

Accommodation and Food on the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek in Nepal

The Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is a fully supported camping trek. While basic teahouses or homestays may be available in lower villages like Darbang and Muri, most of the trek requires tent camping due to the remote terrain.

All camping gear, including tents, mattresses, dining tents, and kitchen equipment, is carried by a team of porters. Nepal Sanctuary Treks provides a comfortable camping experience with professional staff, ensuring hygienic food and proper campsite management even in remote areas.

Due to the remoteness of the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek, there are no shops or restaurants along the upper trail. As a result, all food supplies are carried by the support team from the beginning. Nepal Sanctuary Treks makes an effort to purchase fresh ingredients from local shops in the lower villages whenever possible, supporting the local economy.

Staying well-fed and hydrated is crucial at high altitudes, and the experienced cooking team ensures trekkers receive balanced, energy-rich meals every day.
