Nepal Sanctuary Treks creates inspiring Himalayan journeys that connect travelers with Nepal’s spectacular landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and remarkable people. For more than 27 years, we have organized memorable adventures for celebrated authors, talented artists, renowned mountaineers, and passionate explorers from around the world.

Many of these remarkable travelers have shared their experiences through published books, photographs, and artistic creations. Some have also gifted their work to our Managing Director, Tulsi Gyawali, and the Nepal Sanctuary Treks team. These thoughtful gestures reflect the lasting friendships and meaningful connections we have built along the way.

Join us as we celebrate five inspiring stories of literature, art, adventure, and personal discovery shaped by journeys through Nepal and the Himalayas.

1. Windhorse Warrior and Mountain Medicine and Mission – R.C. Friedericks and the Friedericks Family

We deeply value our longstanding relationship with R.C. Friedericks, affectionately known as “Rishi.” His family has a remarkable legacy of humanitarian service and medical care in Nepal.

Rishi, the son of American medical missionaries Dr. Carl and Betty Anne Friedericks, spent his childhood in China, India, and Nepal. More than 70 years ago, his parents helped bring modern medical care to remote regions of Nepal by establishing hospitals and clinics. In the early 1960s, Rishi witnessed Tibetan refugees arriving at his father’s hospital in Tansen. This experience inspired his lifelong commitment to the Tibetan cause.

A four-generation family legacy

Over the years, Rishi has returned to Nepal several times with Nepal Sanctuary Treks. He has brought students from Hong Kong International School on educational journeys to experience Nepal’s landscapes, culture, and communities. He has also traveled with his wife, Suzanne, and introduced colleagues to the country.

In spring 2025, 14 members of the Friedericks family, spanning four generations, returned to Nepal to honor a legacy rooted in faith, compassion, and service.

Organized by Nepal Sanctuary Treks, this journey was far more than a family vacation. It was a heartfelt tribute to Dr. Carl and Mrs. Betty Anne Friedericks and their enduring contribution to healthcare in Nepal. We felt privileged to help the family celebrate this remarkable legacy. Read More

Windhorse Warrior: Courage, spirituality, and hope

During one of his visits, Rishi gifted us a copy of his novel, Windhorse Warrior, set in 1950s Tibet. The story combines political resistance, spiritual awakening, and romance, drawing inspiration from the legend of King Gesar of Ling.

Through the experiences of Shanghai zealot Chuang Wei Ming and Tibetan scholar Dechen, the novel explores the possibility of a more enlightened society.

Mountain Medicine and Mission: A legacy of medical service

The Friedericks family’s story also lives on through Mountain Medicine and Mission, a collection of stories written by Carl and Betty Anne Friedericks in their later years. Lloyd Johnson compiled the stories, Rachel Tabor edited the book, and Richard Friedericks curated the photographs. Rishi later presented a copy to Tulsi Gyawali.

This collection celebrates the family’s dedication to healthcare and humanitarian service in Nepal. We remain honored to welcome the Friedericks family and help carry forward their legacy.

2. Kailash Book – Marie Milis, Marlyse Schweizer, and Anne Momber

In 2001, Nepal Sanctuary Treks organized a pilgrimage to sacred Mount Kailash for three remarkable women: Marie Milis, a mathematician and educator; Marlyse Schweizer, a teacher and Ericksonian hypnosis therapist; and Anne Momber, a gynecologist, obstetrician, and homeopath.

After their pilgrimage, they documented their experiences in Kailash Book, sharing the personal insights and reflections their journey inspired.

A pilgrimage of self-discovery

For these travelers, the journey around Mount Kailash meant more than reaching a physical destination. It offered an opportunity for reflection, personal growth, and a deeper connection with the world.

Their book explores mythical landscapes, the relationship between body and mind, and the spiritual dimensions of travel. It reminds readers that journeys through sacred places can inspire meaningful inner transformation.

We also had the pleasure of organizing a Bhutan tour and a cultural immersion journey in Nepal for these travelers. We are grateful for their thoughtful gift and for the opportunity to help them discover the cultural and spiritual richness of the Himalayas.

3. The Three Sisters’ Tour and Orient Intérieur II – Brigitte Wagner

Art, family, and adventure came together during the Three Sisters’ Tour, featuring Brigitte, Marie-France, and Gabrielle Wagner. Nepal Sanctuary Treks organized this special journey to celebrate their shared love of art, sisterhood, and travel.

The sisters documented their Nepal adventure in a treasured publication. Marie-France contributed the text, while Gabrielle, Marie-France, and Brigitte captured the journey through photography. Brigitte designed the book’s layout, bringing their memories together in a lasting keepsake that they presented to Tulsi Gyawali.

Orient Intérieur II: Art inspired by travel and memory

Brigitte also gifted us a copy of Orient Intérieur II. Moroccan writer Abdelkébir Khatibi first recognized her artistic work in Rabat in 1986.

Her book explores the relationship between travel, memory, and the inner world, reflecting how experiences and emotional landscapes evolve over time.

A remarkable trekking partnership

Brigitte and her husband, Georges Herquel, a renowned seismologist, share an extraordinary connection with Nepal. They have visited the country 22 times, traveled with Nepal Sanctuary Treks on 20 occasions, and completed 18 treks with our team.

Their adventures have taken them to iconic Himalayan destinations, including Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp, Gokyo Lakes Trek, and Upper Mustang Trek.

Their continued return to Nepal reflects their deep appreciation for its mountains, landscapes, and trekking experiences. We are proud to have helped shape so many of their Himalayan adventures.

4. Immersion in the Himalayas – Ivan Kozorezov

In 2012, Nepal Sanctuary Treks organized a photography expedition for Ivan Kozorezov, a renowned travel and landscape photographer born in Dagestan, then part of the USSR.

Inspired by the Himalayas’ dramatic peaks, striking landscapes, and quiet beauty, Ivan created Immersion in the Himalayas, described as Russia’s first illustrated album dedicated to the region.

On October 7, 2012, he presented a copy of this remarkable photography book to Tulsi Gyawali, Managing Director of Nepal Sanctuary Treks.

Ivan’s striking photographs have introduced Himalayan landscapes to audiences around the world. His work has featured in outdoor exhibitions along Moscow’s famous Arbat Street and in the Moscow Metro, reaching millions of viewers.

We feel privileged to have supported his photography expedition and received a book that captures the extraordinary beauty of the mountains.

5. Touching the Void – Joe Simpson

In 2009, Nepal Sanctuary Treks had the privilege of organizing a Mera Peak expedition for Joe Simpson, the internationally acclaimed mountaineer and author. He traveled with his friend Roe, joining us for a memorable Himalayan adventure.

A mountaineering classic about survival and resilience

Joe Simpson is best known for Touching the Void, his bestselling account of a life-threatening climbing ordeal on Siula Grande, a 21,000-foot mountain in the Peruvian Andes.

The book recounts the extraordinary challenges, difficult decisions, and determination that shaped his fight for survival. Its gripping narrative encourages readers to consider how they might respond when faced with seemingly impossible circumstances.

Touching the Void remains one of the best-known works in mountaineering literature. Simpson’s story highlights human resilience and offers a powerful reminder of the risks and rewards of adventure.

Hosting Joe Simpson on his Mera Peak expedition was a memorable experience for our team. His visit strengthened our connection with the remarkable people whose lives and stories revolve around the mountains.
