Our Story

Tulsi Gyawali founded Nepal Sanctuary Treks in 1998 to share Nepal’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and Himalayan landscapes with travelers from around the world.

With nearly four decades of experience in the tourism industry, Tulsi has built the company around personalized service, local knowledge, careful planning, and responsible tourism.

Over the years, we have developed lasting relationships with our trekking crew, operational staff, accommodation providers, transportation partners, and local communities. These relationships give us a deep understanding of Nepal and help us deliver consistent service throughout each journey.

Safety is our top priority at Nepal Sanctuary Treks. With more than 27 years of company experience in Nepal’s trekking industry, we focus on careful preparation, risk management, and our travelers’ well-being.

Our safety approach starts before the trek. We assess itineraries, coordinate transportation and accommodation, and prepare for potential changes in weather and trail conditions. If unexpected situations arise, such as landslides, heavy snowfall, or route closures, our operations team works with our guides to assess the options and adjust plans where necessary.

On the trail, our guides monitor travelers’ well-being, consider individual fitness levels, and adjust walking pace when appropriate. They carry first-aid kits and pulse oximeters to support health monitoring at altitude. They also use the Lake Louise Monitoring Form to assess symptoms of acute mountain sickness (AMS) as travelers ascend.

For high-altitude treks, our teams carry portable altitude chambers and satellite phones where required. These resources support emergency preparedness and help our guides communicate with our Kathmandu operations team in remote areas. We also follow established communication and emergency response procedures to coordinate support when needed.

We invest in staff development to help our team prepare for the challenges of trekking in Nepal. Before each trekking season, we conduct in-house training covering first aid, altitude sickness awareness, risk assessment, emergency response, and guest care. Our staff also participate in external training programs where available.

Through careful preparation, regular training, clear communication, and attentive support, we work to manage risks and protect our travelers’ well-being throughout their journeys.

We achieved Travelife Partner status in 2018 and Travelife Certification in 2019. We maintain our certification through rigorous independent onsite audits every two years, which assess compliance with more than 200 sustainability criteria. Our current certification is valid through 2027.
