Day 01: Arrive at Kathmandu Airport

Start your adventure with a scenic 45-minute flight to Tumlingtar, where you will meet your trekking team. Upon arrival, travel by private vehicle to Khandbari, a lively town where you can witness the rural lifestyle of Nepal.

As you drive up, enjoy views of cornfields, bamboo groves, and Sal trees. The road climbs to 1,960 meters, the highest point of the day, before descending to the Gurung village of Chichira. Here, you’ll pause to check your entry permit and explore the peaceful, shaded forests of rhododendrons and oaks.

Your journey continues on a winding road towards Num, located on a high outcrop above the Arun River. From here, you’ll be treated to stunning panoramic views of the valley and the distant Seduwa village below.

Day 04: Trek to Seduwa

After breakfast, leave Num and begin your trek towards Seduwa. Start with a steep descent through terraced farms and lush forests toward the Arun River at 770 m / 2,526 ft. Cross the suspension bridge over the wild Arun River before starting a long zigzag ascent to Seduwa.

Along the way, pass through towering bamboo groves and experience vibrant village life, immersing yourself in the authentic Himalayan atmosphere. As you continue, you will enter Makalu Barun National Park, where you’ll register your trekking permits. This marks the official beginning of your unforgettable Himalayan adventure.

Day 05: Trek to Tashigaon

After a hearty breakfast, begin your uphill journey, passing numerous stone steps and several Mani walls. Trek through small hillside farms, cardamom plantations, and lush bamboo and rhododendron forests.

After a couple of hours, reach the charming settlement of Chyaksa Danda, where you’ll find tea shops, schools, and traditional houses. Along the trail, listen for the melodious sounds of barbets, cuckoos, drongos, and laughing thrushes.

Continue hiking through dense forests and cross streams via sturdy log bridges. As you approach your destination, the hillside village of Tashigaon comes into view. The journey may take longer than expected due to the undulating terrain. Finally, descend to a log bridge before making your last ascent on stone steps to reach Tashigaon, your peaceful highland village for the night.

Day 06: Trek to Khongma Danda

Ascent: 1,461 m / 4,793 ft.
Descent: 61 m / 203 ft.

Today’s hike is challenging, with steep terrain and rewarding views. Begin your ascent from Tashigaon, trekking through lush forests toward a bubbling rivulet and onward onto a ridge. The trail grows steeper as you pass grazing lands (Kharka), navigate rough stone stairs, and skirt small mountain lakes.

Follow the ridge to your final climb before descending slightly to arrive at Khongma Danda, a scenic highland settlement offering panoramic mountain vistas and a perfect spot to rest for the night.

Day 07: Rest & acclimatization day at Khongma

Today is a designated rest day, giving your body time to adjust to the altitude and prepare for the challenging Shipton La crossing the following day. If you are up for some exploration, you can take a scenic walk along Khongma Ridge towards Shipton La, where you’ll be treated to spectacular views of Kanchenjunga, making it an unforgettable experience amidst the Himalayas.

Day 08: Trek to Dobatey via Shipton La

From here, a short descent leads to a tranquil mountain lake. Next, ascend to Keke La Pass at 4,150 m / 13,615 ft. After crossing the pass, descend into the picturesque Dobatey Valley, concluding a rewarding day amidst the stunning Himalayan landscapes.

Day 09: Trek to Yangri Kharka

The walk will take approximately 5 hours, reaching an altitude of 5,300 m before returning to base camp.

Day 14: Trek to Yangle Kharka

After breakfast, today offers your final opportunity to witness breathtaking views of the towering mountains, including Kangchenjunga. The day begins with an ascent to Keke La Pass, followed by a gradual descent to Kalo Pokhari and a steep climb to Shipton La Pass. Continue along the mountainside for about an hour to reach the large cairn marking Sano Pokhari Danda at 4,105 m / 13,468 ft. After another hour of undulating terrain, you arrive at the final pass; Khongma La at 3,890 m / 12,756 ft, marked by a traditional Mani wall. The day concludes with a descent, mostly along stone steps, to Danda Kharka, completing a trek filled with scenic wonders.

Day 17: Trek Danda Kharka-Seduwa

What wildlife can be encountered during Makalu base Camp trek?

When is the ideal time to visit Makalu Base Camp?

The best time is during the pre-monsoon (spring) and post-monsoon (autumn) seasons, which are generally in April-May and October-November. During these times, you will experience the nice weather, with clear skies and mild temperatures, which makes trekking both more pleasant and safer.

Do I need travel insurance to embark Makalu Base Camp Trek?

Travel insurance is not included in the trip cost. It’s essential to have comprehensive coverage for potential risks like medical emergencies, evacuation, and trip cancellations. In case of evacuation, contact your insurance company’s 24-hour hotline. Make sure your policy covers helicopter evacuation to a Kathmandu hospital. We strongly advise guests to get insured for a worry-free vacation.

Where in Tribhuvan airport I will be paying my visa fee?  I’ve already completed the application online but I’m unclear where I make my payment at the airport.  

Since you completed the process online, you will receive a submission receipt with a barcode. Please print this receipt and bring it with you when you visit the visa fees collection counter. Make sure about the type of visa you will need (15 days, 30 days, or 90 days) and make the payment accordingly. We recommend you bring the exact amount in US currency of the current visa fee while paying at the visa counter.

Next, you should head to the Immigration Desk, taking along your online application form, payment receipts, and your passport. Hand over these documents to the immigration officer to initiate the visa processing procedure.

Are there any health risks or altitude sickness concerns on the trek?

Altitude sickness can be a serious risk for trekkers at high elevations, so it’s important to acclimatize properly. Can I rent or buy trekking equipment in Nepal?

Yes, you can rent or purchase trekking gear in Kathmandu or Pokhara, including items like sleeping bags, down jackets, and trekking poles. Make sure to check the quality and condition of rented equipment. For instance, sleeping bags are available for rent at rates ranging from USD 1 to USD 1.50 per day. How much weight do I have to carry or how much will my porter carry?

You can bring as much as clothes you want but extra luggage is not required for the trek, you can leave your extra luggage in Kathmandu or Pokhara’s hotel. For the trek you can carry enough clothes you require in your backpack or carry only the camera, water bottle few clothes etc in your backpack. The potter can carry your extra duffle bag clothes which can weigh up to  30kg. However the local domestic flights (Lukla, Jomsom, Juphal, Simikot) allows maximum of 15kg per person including carry-on baggage.
