Pikey Peak Family Trek Nepal
It’s hard to distill with appropriate justice our family’s weeklong adventure organized by Tulsi at Sanctuary Treks Nepal, but I’ll try. In Dec. 2025, our 10-person group started in the southeastern part of Nepal at Koshitappu Wildlife Reserve outside of Biratnagar, which was a plane ride away from Kathmandu, and a day-long bus ride away from the start of our actual trek in the north, near Dhap, where we hiked a 5-day portion of the Pikey Peak trail, including the 13,500’ summit of Pikey Peak. The logistics of getting to Biratnagar and then to Dhap was a bit out of the ordinary for a typical trek, but Tulsi not only picked us all up from KTM airport at the very beginning of our journey, but then got us all safely to Biratnagar, then to Dhap. (Kudos to our bus driver to Dhap, who safely navigated a big detour off the paved roads, and somehow crossed rivers, boulders…steered us around precarious ledges on dusty dirt trails that could hardly pass as roads, and delivering us safely to our first tea house lodge in the mountains at 9500’. Talk about a Nepali adventure!)
Once on the trails, our extraordinary guides, Khadka Ral, Bishal, and Chhiring exhibited utter professionalism, care, and warmth throughout the entire journey. From leading us thru the trails to ensuring “everyone’s” hands were sanitized prior to eating, and making sure we were all safe, well fed, and even pampered with hot water bottles each night. A few in our group needed a little extra care due to orthopedic concerns and Khadka was able to arrange transport on 2 occasions to ferry some to our final destination. These 3 men could not have worked any harder. Their dedication to our safety and enjoyment was evident 100% of the time. They were also great companions on the long walks. And what unforgettable walks these were! The trek was stunning and the peak climb was everything I’d hoped for.
And let me praise our energetic and joyful porters: Lekchandra, Khemsaf, Robin, Nabaraj, Sarke, & Ramkumar. (Forgive any misspellings.) A HUGE thank you for schlepping our very heavy duffles up and down and up and down and up and down some more. How my bag seemed to get heavier each day is a total mystery, but you all did this without a whiff of complaint. Thank you!
Our trek was glorious. Doing it in December meant far fewer people around, but colder weather. Thankfully, the ginger lemon honey tea, dal bhat and Sherpa stew sustained us all and we rarely, if ever, were uncomfortable. And our lodge hosts were also wonderful. I can’t recommend Sanctuary Treks Nepal enough and am already dreaming about another trek in Nepal! Thank you Tulsi for a magical & unforgettable trip of a lifetime. You all are the BEST! ~Lizanne
