Trip Overview

Beni to Dunai Trek is quite an adventurous trek and also this is a very isolated trail for trekkers who want to explore nature and wilderness.  The trail takes you into a complete no man’s land, for about three days we don’t encounter any settlements. You pass through the Dhorpatan Wildlife reserve and along the trail you can see a whole range of mountains, Dhaulagiri and Gurja Himal is closer in view. In this GHT section, you enter Dolpa.

Trip Itinerary

Day 01: Arrive at Kathmandu airport (1,302m/4,270ft)

You will be received and escorted to the hotel by our staff, refresh yourself and take some rest or explore the area around your hotel. Accommodate at Kathmandu.

Day 02: Kathmandu valley sightseeing and Trek preparation

Kathmandu is the cultural heart of Nepal and has been a famous destination for tourists ever since Nepal opened its borders to visitors. Today after breakfast we will explore Kathmandu valley, a guided tour will be conducted to major world heritage sites inside the valley. As Kathmandu valley is a beautiful combination of Hinduism and Buddhism we will visit historical sites like; Durbar Squares, Pashupatinath, Swayambhunath (monkey temple) and Buddhist shrine of Bouddhanath which is one of the largest stupa in the world. After the tour you will prepare yourself for the trek, will be briefed about the trek; buy all the trekking equipments required and overnight at hotel.

Day 03: Kathmandu to Beni 9hrs drive

You will have an early breakfast in the hotel and a vehicle organized by the company will drive us Beni, it is a busy bazaar town and headquarter of Myagdi District. Once we reach there you can explore the bazaar or relax, we will be spending the night here.

Day 04: Beni to Darbang (1,100m/3,608ft) 6-7hrs trek

It is a long distance from Beni to Darbang but as it is mostly trekking on flat trail, it is not a difficult trek. After having breakfast we leave Beni and cross the bridge over Myagdi Khola. As we cross the bridge we trek through the dirt trail and soon through beautiful fields, we pass the village of Bagarpath, Khobre and Surkemela. We trek down to the river and trek along it through a grassy trail, soon we cross a suspension bridge and enter the village of Singha. From here it is about half an hour to Tatopani, after Taatopani we continue trekking following the Myagdi River and passing few other villages. Not only this but we pass many other villages too, until we arrive at Darbang, it is quite a big and busy town where we can camp our tents and spend the night.

Day 05: Darbang to Lamsung (2,160m/7,086ft) 8hrs trek

Today is a long trek day; we have an early breakfast and leave Darbang crossing a suspension bridge over Myagdi Khola. We trek on a small trail following the river and soon pass the village of Phedi, after here the trail changes into dirt trail. We cross the river again and follow the dirt trail climbing quite steeply; Dhaulagiri can be seen in range. We continue trekking steeply along with stunning views of Dhaulagiri Range and Gurja Himal. Continuing to trek after about one and half hour we cross a suspension bridge to the village of Dharapani, after the village we trek through stairs that climbs up steeply to a small pass. Now from the pass we gradually descend to the village of Tarkam, we can stop here to have our Lunch. After lunch the trail goes down for a few time being and becomes flatter, soon the trail gradually climbs through field to the village of Sibang. Trekking further we pass several other villages and cross bridges over Myagdi Khola taking us to village of Lamsung, we will spend our night here.

Day 06: Lamsung to Chhentung (2,950m/9,678ft) [via Jalja La (3,386m/11,108ft)] 8hrs trek

This another long trek day but it is a beautiful trek, mostly passing through a forest. There are almost no villages throughout the trail so after having breakfast we need to carry packed lunch. We leave Lamsung and follow the trail above fields; we follow the Chirphire River upstream, soon the river will be far below us and we trek up to the top of the pass. We will be climbing up through beautiful rhododendron forests, once we reach the top of the pass we will be rewarded with magnificient view, better than from Poon hill. After the pass it is a flat and easy walk through beautiful pine forests and we trek following the Ghurjaghat Khola. We pass small settlements of Ghurjaghat and Kaldegothe, from here it is only couple of minutes to Chhentung where we will rest the night.

Day 07: Chhentung to Thakur (3,309m/10,856ft) 9-10hrs trek

Comparatively today is a very long trek day; we have an early breakfast and rejoin the trail. As we begin to trek we take the trail going up in the village and enter a forest which climb to the Chhentung pass, from the pass you will get nice views. After the trail we trek on a flat trail that later goes gradually down and from a point it starts to ascend towards the second pass. Once we reach at the top of the pass from there the trail gets flat and further it descends, we will come down to a river. We trek on a bigger path next to the river and after we reach at the top of a slope we descend for about one and half hour through the forest. We then arrive at the tiny settlement of Thakur; the village is only inhabited during mid-spring to mid-autumn. We camp our tetns here and rest the night.

Day 08: Thakur to Guibang (2,768m/9,081ft) 7hrs trek

Today’s trail has lots of ups and downs; we trek through pine and rhododendron forests. We have an early breakfast and begin to trek. As we begin to trek the trail descends through a pine forests to the Gusiun Khola, we cross a bridge over the river; the bridge is the border between Myagdi and Rukum district. Few minutes after crossing the bridge we pass the village of Ghusiun and further climbs up to the village of Khamidada. We can stop here to have our lunch in a restaurant serving dal bhaat. After lunch we descend through a forest passing Jarlung and Tatopani, there are hotspring here in Tatopani as what it is named after. We cross a bridge and begin to climb steeply to a point from where the trail gets flatter and we pass the village of him, continuing to trek we trek through terraces. The trail climb up steeply before descending to a wood bridge over a stream, after crossing the bridge we start ascending towards the village of Guibang. There are no real guesthouses or restaurants here in the village; however we are camp here for the night.

Day 09: Guibang to Campsite Sen Khola (3,979m/13,054ft) 7hrs trek

Today we trek through the isolated trail; it is a no-man’s land where we will be trekking on deserted trail. After having breakfast we begin to trek; we begin to trek by climbing the hill behind the village and crossing a stream and climbing up to the village of Dule. This is the last village before we reach Dunai which is in Dolpa, it takes about another two or three days until we reach another settlement. We climb further through forests to a small pass, after which we then begin to descend towards Sen Khola. As we get closer to the river we then stop descending as start to ascend gradually following the river to the campsite. It is a large flat area which is a suitable site to camp or trekking further for few minutes is another camping site where we can choose to camp too.

Day 10: Campsite Sen Khola to Campsite Purpang, Saure Khola (4,065m/13,336ft) 5hrs trek

Comparatively today is a shorter trek day; as we are on higher altitude it is not suitable or safe to cross the pass today. After having breakfast we steeply climb for about one and half hour and then become easier, while we bill ascending gradually. As we are climbing to higher altitude it might be difficult to trek but the view along the trail are amazing, you will witness bare and snowcapped mountains, not only this but you even have chances of trekking on the snow as well. From a point the trail starts gradually descending to the Saure Khola, we cross the river and trek for few minutes to the campsite. There are few walls that are built as cooking place and suitable land to camp our tents; you will be rewarded with a nice view of the mountains and the trail we came through.

Day 11: Campsite Purpang to Dunai (2,096m/6,876ft) [via Jang La (4,519m/14,826ft)] 10hrs trek

Today is a very long as well as challenging trek day; we will have to cross two passes. We have a very early breakfast and leave the campsite rejoining our trail, we ascending through completely deserted landscape. The landscape is very beautiful and we are lucky there can we snow which will bring more charm to the landscape, as we climb higher we pass a small pass. After crossing the small pass the trail gets flat and begin to descend gradually until a point from where we then begin to climb back steeply for about 45mins to the real pass (Jang La), after we cross the pass we enter Dolpa. From the pass we will get to see beautiful views of deserted landscape, snowcapped Himalaya and also the view of the famous Kanjirowa. After the pass we gradually descend through forests passing few streams and rivers, we reach the Thuli Beri River and after crossing the river we follow the river downstream to the village of Dunai. The village is the district headquarters of Dolpa district with few basic lodges and a campsite where we will camp our tents for the night.

Day 12: Dunai to Juphal 3hrs trek

Today is probably the shortest and the last trek day, but there are few places that are worth visiting in Dunai; places like there is a Buddhist monastery up the hill, Dolpo Bon School which is a bit further away from Dunai and few other sites you can explore before we begin to trek. As it is a short trek day we can begin to trek late, we follow the dirt trail as we cross a big suspension bridge that leads to Suligad and Phoksundo Lake. We pass the village of Rupgad and further another village known as Kalagauda, after Kalagauda we leave the dirt trail and join another trail climbing up to Juphal. It has a airport and a bus stop, our trek ends here, we spend the night here prepare ourselves to leave tomorrow.

Day 13: Juphal to Nepalgunj/ Nepalgunj to Khathmandu [via flight]

We will have an early breakfast and walk up to the airport nearby the hotel in Juphal.  After a short flight we reach Nepalgunj and from here we will take another flight to Kathmandu, once we reach Kathmandu you will have free time to either explore the valley or rest. We will stay the night here in Kathmandu.

Day 14: Spare day in Kathmandu

We will wake up late and have a good proper breakfast. You will have the whole day to yourselves to either rest in your hotel or explore Kathmandu valley. We will spend the night in Kathmandu.

Day 15: Back home

Leisure time and explore Kathmandu until the departure time when you will be transferred to airport and fly back home.
