After breakfast in the hotel, we drive for about 20 minutes to Budhanilkantha Temple, 8 km north of Kathmandu. From Budhanilkantha, we walk through the serene Shivapuri National Park. This is a Government protected verdant forest where over 500 species of plants are found. We start our hike from the southern boundary of the park where the army check post is located. On the way, we come across a monastery known as Nagi Gumpa situated at an altitude of 2330 m north of Kathmandu and above Budhanilkantha Temple. This is the only monastery specifically for Buddhist nuns and foreigners often come here for meditation. It is a steep uphill climb through a narrow and dusty trail for about half an hour followed by two hours of less strenuous uphill trial to Shivapuri. After lunch and a casual stroll around the place, we take a short cut which is a downhill trail to Kopan which takes about two hours before driving back to Kathmandu. This trail is also good for cycling, bird watching and jungle walks.
